Modern Muses – An Homage to Female Power

Femininity in art has many faces – powerful, sensual, radiant.
With my portrait series "Modern Muses" I celebrate nine prominent women who embody feminine strength, charisma, and depth in their own unique way.
What were once mythological figures become modern female portraits in my work – expressive, emotional, inspiring.

My art doesn't just aim to show the exterior – it makes inner presence visible.
It invites us to rediscover femininity: as a statement, as a creative force, as a source of self-determination, beauty, and connection.

Even in antiquity, the nine Muses stood for inspiration: goddesses of art, poetry, music, and dance. They were more than myth – they were the epitome of creative energy.
This idea never left me. But I wanted to rethink it – modern, vibrant, feminine.

This is how my project "Modern Muses" came about. Nine well-known women of our time – actresses, singers, presenters, a boxing world champion, and a fashion designer – each embody a Muse.
Not as an ideal image, but as strong, sensual, independent personalities.

In my female portraits, I combine emotional art with archetypal depth. I don't paint roles, but charisma. Not poses, but feminine presence.

Perhaps as you read, you'll feel what inspired me about these women – and why I believe that being a Muse today means more than just being a source of inspiration.
It is a symbol. An attitude. And a timeless image of female power.

Sketches of the female portraits for the art project

1. What is a Muse – and what defines her today?

In Greek mythology, the Muses were divine beings – daughters of Zeus, guardians of the arts. Each creative discipline had a Muse assigned to it: from tragedy to astronomy, from dance to poetry. Those who created art invoked them.

But what does it mean to be a Muse today?

For me, a Muse is not an object of admiration – she is a counterpart. A woman with depth, edges, light and shadow. One who inspires because she remains true to herself – not because she is perfect.

In a world that often reduces women to roles, being a Muse is an act of freedom. It means: I am visible. I have an impact. I create from within myself – and allow others to recognize something of their own in it.

Many women today are at a point where they can redefine themselves. Beyond expectations. Beyond clichés. The Muse is no longer a Muse "for someone". She radiates from within herself.

And perhaps that's where the magic begins – when inspiration is not given, but comes from one's own depth.

2. The idea behind my "Modern Muses" project

The idea for "Modern Muses" arose from an inner desire: I wanted to give the ancient Muses a new face – a vibrant and modern one, in my own visual language.

Because what used to be mythological figures, I now see in real women – in all those who touch us with their charisma, their path, their attitude.

I began to wonder: What if we no longer think of the Muses as distant goddesses, but as women of today? Women who are grounded in life, who have found themselves – and thereby inspire others.

So I chose nine prominent women who, for me, embody exactly that: strength, sensuality, character. Actresses, singers, a designer, a boxer – each with her own story, with inner fire, with radiance.

Each of them embodied one of the classical Muses in my project – as a modern translation. For example, Regina Halmich became Melpomene, the Muse of Tragedy.

I wanted to show that beauty and strength today have many faces.

This project was not only artistically significant for me – it was also a very personal exploration of what femininity means to me: real, changeable, powerful.

3. The artistic process – From conversation to portrait

Before I pick up a brush, I listen. Because every portrait for me begins with a feeling – not with a line.

For the "Modern Muses" project, I traveled through Germany. Berlin, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart – in all these places I met my Muses personally. Not only photos were taken, but encounters. Conversations full of openness and depth.

I was given insights that went far beyond what was visible: What it feels like to stand in front of millions of people – or in the boxing ring, when the decisive moment comes and everything depends on a single second. We talked about stage fright, inner strength, about change, vulnerability – and about what true beauty is all about.

I took all these impressions with me to the studio. When painting, they flowed into every color choice and every pose.

I wanted to make the inner glow of these women visible – their energy, their dignity, their inner strength.

The portraits became not just a depiction of a woman – but of something divine that slumbers in all of us.

4. The nine Muses in portrait – Symbolism & selection

For each Muse in this project, I selected a woman who, for me, matched the respective role not only outwardly, but also energetically. My aim was not to transfer the ancient archetypes one-to-one – but to reinterpret their essence.

Regina Halmich, boxing world champion, becomes Melpomene, Muse of Tragedy – combative, courageous, full of expressive power.

➤ Annabelle Mandeng embodies Clio, the Muse of History – celebrated, dignified, with an aura of depth and elegance.

Tina Ruland appears as Terpsichore, Muse of Dance – moved, graceful, free.

Sonja Kiefer, fashion designer, represents Thalia, Muse of Comedy – flourishing, playful, with a sense of beauty.

➤ Jenny Jürgens represents Calliope, Muse of Epic Poetry – wise, reflective, with a strong inner voice.

➤ Valerie Niehaus becomes Euterpe, Muse of Lyric Poetry – sensitive, clear, with poetic charisma.

➤ Xenia Seeberg interprets Erato, Muse of Love Poetry – passionate and full of intensity.

➤ Tanja Bülter embodies Urania, Muse of Astronomy – intellectual, clear, forward-looking.

➤ Cassandra Steen, singer, becomes Polyhymnia, Muse of Sacred Poetry and Hymns – powerful, spiritual, deeply connected.

In my paintings, these modern personalities meet the timeless archetypes – a dialogue between the present and eternity.

5. Femininity in art – What I want to show with my Muses

Femininity in art has always been an inexhaustible source of artistic inspiration for me. But what does it mean today – in a time when women are constantly redefining themselves?

I see femininity not as something rigid, but as something living and multifaceted. It can be sensual and strong at the same time. Gentle and clear. Vulnerable – and yet full of inner strength.

With my "Modern Muses" project, I wanted to show my very personal view of femininity. Not a standardized idea, but facets – each Muse a different aspect.

I developed the classical idea of the Muse further – as a symbolic figure for what defines women today. In my paintings, exactly this form of femininity in art is at the center: charisma, personality, energy.

I believe: It's time for new female images – for archetypes that are allowed to shine, instead of conforming.

My Muses embody exactly that. They carry a silent depth, a powerful presence – and they remind us that a Muse lives in every woman, if we give her space.

6. Art that moves – Exhibition & social purpose

The Modern Muses were first presented as part of an exhibition in Berlin – at Art Galerie Richter, which offered space for encounter, exchange, and genuine experience.

Many visitors immediately felt: These portraits show more than outer beauty. They tell of inner strength, of self-confidence, of the multifaceted nature of female presence.

The press also reported – with great interest in the combination of artistic ambition and personal depth.

The social aspect was particularly close to my heart: A portion of the proceeds from the sale of these paintings was donated to the Tribute to Bambi foundation – to support children's aid projects.

Because if art touches, it can also make a difference. Not only in the heart, but also very concretely in the lives of others.
