Book recommendation: The book "The Flowers of Women"

Buchempfehlung: Das Buch "Die Blumen der Frauen"

Besides women, beautiful flowers are very often an essential element of my paintings. That's why I am naturally very interested in the connection between art, flowers and femininity. And so I became very curious about Andreas Honegger's book "The Flowers of Women". To anticipate, I was not disappointed!

The book explores women's use of plants in various cultures and eras to promote beauty, health, and spirituality. It covers not only botanical aspects but, more importantly, also social and cultural contexts in which plants were used and their symbolism in paintings.

Orientalism

For centuries, painters have used flowers to express secret messages in their portrayals of women: Lilies symbolize purity and innocence, water lilies emphasize sensual seduction, and the lotus becomes a symbol of exotic beauty. "The Flowers of Women" is a book that takes a stroll through the history of art and culture from the 15th century to the present.

What I particularly liked is the way Honegger complemented the texts with images of plants and women from different cultures. These images are not only beautiful to look at, but also create a connection between the theme of flowers and art. The works of my favorite painters such as Tamara de Lempicka, John William Waterhouse, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Paul Gauguin are wonderfully introduced to the readers and interpreted in terms of their floral symbolism.

In my painting, you often find white or red lilies, orchids, and roses. The book has inspired me to depict other flowers in my female portraits as well. It has also encouraged me to further explore the connection between nature and femininity.

Frauen und Blumen

Overall, I can highly recommend "THE FLOWERS OF WOMEN" to anyone interested in the connection between art and the symbolism of flowers. The book has a very handy format and includes many beautiful illustrations. It is well-researched, appealingly designed, and offers a wealth of information and inspiration. I am glad I bought it and look forward to implementing the contents of the book in my art!
